It's annoying that it takes them so long though (for instance with KDE).

Ruby 1.6.1 is pre-installed in Mandrake 7.2 (my distribution of choice). I 
can't remember if Ruby was in 7.1 or 7.0. But I've found Mandrake to be very 
good at supporting the latest stuff (for instance I have KDE 2.0, X 4.01 &
ReiserFS filesystem in a standard install. Also I could set up and
configure my ADSL modem at install time). 

Sorry if this sounds like a rant on distributions, I really just wanted to
say that a fairly new version of Ruby is in the latest Mandrake distro.
