Hmm, I have OpenOffice 1.0.1 on Red Hat. I can
certainly open the .ppt, but I can't see a way
to save as a .pdf -- for some reason, Export 
has more options than Save As (counterintuitive
to me), but the nearest thing is .eps I think.
