I'd roughly classify according to these three styles grep, sed () aren't meta POSIX / egrep () are meta character classes like [:digit:], [:space:] etc. perl / ruby () are meta character classes like \d, \s etc. positive and negative lookahead and lookbehind white space for readability ...
