There is a pretty cool tool called antiword 
(http://www.winfield.demon.nl/) available for loads of platforms (as 
source or binaries) (check end of mail).

It takes a word file as input and chucks it back out as plain ole ascii 
text. Very good but of course can't deal with pics but can do tables.
