Sorry about overlooking the tip to use:

> 	./configure --with-opengl=opengl
After being told that I needed this for Linux I understood, but the 
explanation in the read me that Linux uses libraries named ... didn't 
alert me to the fact that that was referring to me.

PS -- in the end I did get everything installed, but as soon as I choose
new it crashes.  If you want more details I would be happy to forward
what I can.
