Speaking of Ruby/DBI, is there any plan to support a host specification
within the connection string w/o needing to use dbd_proxy and running
another process ?

Perl/DBI does support it.

e.g.

dbh = DBI.connect ("dbi:Pg:#{spamdb}:host=#{host}", "roberto", "",
                   'AutoCommit' => false)

Thanks,
