That's because the newsgroup traffic is being copied to the mailing list.
Would it be sensible to make the gateway non-symmetrical, like


      ruby-talk =========>   comp.lang.ruby
                            
      ruby-clr  <=========
                 =========>

That way, only those subscribed to ruby-clr do receive the messages
posted only to c.l.r.

Another possibility would be making the gateway more intelligent,
requiring people wishing to use comp.lang.ruby to register themselves
before their postings are copied to ruby-talk.
