It sounds like you want to do is very simple.  There is a tool which is
designed for what you want:
http://expect.nist.gov
It's available for win32 (cygwin and native, great installer), and Unix
(originally from).  It uses Tcl for its language; there is a ruby
module, but what you want is so simple why even bother, just look at an
example and adapt it?
