I think I've got the solution,

#!/usr/bin/ruby

require 'timeout'
begin
    status = Timeout::timeout(10) do
      %x[sudo tail -f /var/log/messages]
    end
rescue Timeout::Error
  puts 'execution expired'
end

This might do the job
