I also may have some issue with memory management:

One program deals with hundreds of megabyte sized files, videos, images, 
large logfiles.
When this Ruby program ran for a while, the whole computer slows down 
*drastically*.

This is on Windows; I had the vague impression the problem may not be as 
severe on Linux.

ruby 1.6.5 (2001-09-19) [i386-cygwin]


 From where could that be solved:
* my Ruby program
   (I played with that (forced GC(?); 'GC.start' IIRC),
     but lost needed objects.)
* the Ruby interpreter
* the Windows installer's build
* Cygwin
* Window settings
   (where&how could I set the maximum amount of memory,
    so that the GC runs earlier? WinME)
