Several ways:

irb> myval = 'wererwerwerwerweritop123233434345556#personID'
=> "wererwerwerwerweritop123233434345556#personID"
irb> myval[37..-1]
=> "personID"
irb> myval.split('#',2).last
=> "personID"
irb> myval[/[^#]*\z/]
=> "personID"
