Excuse me for not being clear.  The logic that the XSL spec defines (IE: 
<xsl:if>... <xsl:choose>...) is a neccessary evil.  I recognise that logic 
statements (branches, variables, and other flow control constructs) are 
neccessary, and I can't think of a better way of doing it and stay with a 
single language (XML).  But I don't think programming in XSL is a good way 
to program, functional or no.
