I'll explain it by example:

a = "a"
#=> "a"
class << a
   def fooify
    return "foo #{self}"
   end
end

a.fooify
#=> "foo a"
b = "b"
#=> "b"
b.fooify
#NoMethodError: undefined method `fooify' for "b":String
#	from (irb):9
#	from :0
