They upset threading if you set your client to create new threads on
subject changes (unless your client also lets you configure what
constitutes a subject change), and they waste space otherwise taken up
with the subject.

There's no good reason to filter on subject for mailing list messages;
there are plenty of other headers which make such filtering much more
accurate.  If speed is an issue for you, well, sorry, blame your
software, not the list.
