It seems to die with *any* script, just bringing up mod_ruby
kills it.

I just grabbed the latest version of both Ruby and mod_ruby
from CVS, but I get the same results:

My Apache was built with --enable-module=so, and I'm building Ruby
with --enable-shared.

Is there any other data I can find for you?
