Thanks y'all for your comments; it's been an intesting thread
( sometimes a rough ride ;) )

I especially appreciated all constructive input, that helped understand 
things better. (I still think it would help tremendously (especially 
beginners) if there were some sonsistent rule that saves newbies from 
surprises such as "... there are some methods that are destructive 
without declaring that in their name; just RTM")

I'm continuing my quest for learning Ruby, and whish everyone what I'm 
looking for: fun
