I find them useful, and I always find it exasperating when Micros**t
plays a determining role in anything....  But this threading problem
has been brought up a lot in the past and is still causing
inconvenience, so it seems like something has to be done.

Can the numbers be preserved in such a way that all the current
indexing and sorting can still be done?
