I think I am the one that encouraged him; I also think it is not silly; 
there are at least two reasons:
 - you learn the language faster, because you understand what are (or
   seem) peculiarities,
 - The language may actually grow due to peculiarities pointed (and
   taken) out. It often takes outsiders to notice them!
