Well, just when things seemed to be going so well, I seem to have had
a massive disk failure. I'm running low-level diagnostics, but it
looks like a fairly large area of one of my drives no longer has any
bits on it.

So... I'm going to have to fix this all up tomorrow when I can get a
new drive and bring stuff back off tape. This might take a while, as
I'm going to take the opportunity to do a full upgrade of the box,
which will mean knitting some stuff back together.
