IMHO the idea of SWIG is really great. I therefore help making it more
acknowledged and used.

I suggest getting the latest greatest CVS sources
(http://www.swig.org/cvs.html). Make sure to check out branch
"mkoeppe-1-3-a5-patches" (as suggested by Masaki Fukushima's).
If you are running cygwin (which does not seem to be the case) you might
need two patched files from me, as they have not yet made their way into
cvs.
BTW: Masaki Fukushima is responsible for the Ruby-SWIG support
(http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/raa-list.rhtml?name=swigruby).
