Here are a couple of hacks that  might get you what you want.  If anyone
knows how to truly specify a space in this globbing language, I'd like to
know too.

files=Dir["C:/dir?dir1/next?dir2/*"]

OR

files=Dir["C:/dir[^a-z]dir1/next[^a-z]dir2/*"]

PS - I saw a brief description of the globbing language in the Dir
documentation in the manual.
