He makes a prototype, good engineering practice.
It runs Right, no? So there must be some spec somewhere. I believe a
bunch of unit tests does take care of that.

He then refactors it to become "better".
Given a decent prototype (thank you, Ruby), that's not so bad as it may
sound.
