I've noticed that running Ruby on XP is significantly slower than on Linux.
It looks to be primarily due to the initial startup stuff -- once it is up
and running, it seems to run much closer to Linux speed.

Any suggestions for mitigating this? I'm using the One Click Installer from
rubyforge, and I've heard rumors that compiling the source yourself tends to
result in a faster environment. Is there any truth to this?
