One could also say that it's a way of making spelling more democratic: correct spelling is not defined by some abstract instance (Duden for German) but by all people using that language. But then again, this might be how it was for ages - just Google makes spellings spread more rapidly. Languages - natural and artificial - are really fascinating... Kind regards robert
