Since I use both Outlook and Lotus Notes, I don't understand the bizarre 
output.

Unfortunately I understand the inconvenience with both clients. I deal 
with them by keeping a gvim window handy for doing the left margin quoting 
and reformatting. (This could be made even simpler by putting the 
cut-n-pastes and quote substitution commands on the menu bar, but I can 
already do it fast enough with command recall that it would probably take 
months to reach break even for the time involved in automating it.)
