lib/thread.rb の高速な置き換えである fastthread の採用が、作者の
MenTaL guY より提案されています。(APIは100%互換とのこと)

　残念ながら激しい regression test のようなものはないようですが、
Rails で最近よく使われるWebサーバ Mongrel が(速度のために) gem で
依存を持たせているため、それなりに実績もユーザベースもあるとの主張
です。

　特に異論がなければ、 --with-fastthread で切り替えられるような
形でまず trunk に、その後 1.8 に入れてみたいと思いますが、いかが
でしょうか。
