I just built:

u0610:[0]/root> ruby -v
ruby 1.8.4 (2006-03-04) [ia64-linux]
u0610:[0]/root> gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.4.5 20051201 (Red Hat 3.4.5-2)

and all seems to be working.

I use the following:

    ./configure --prefix=/usr CFLAGS="-g -O0

On your "HP-UX/IA64" box?

I tried CC=cc CFLAGS="-g" and now the error is:
/opt/build/ruby-1.8.4/lib/mkmf.rb:6: [BUG] unknown node type 0
(0x40034140)

Building with GCC 3.4.3 and CFLAGS="-O0" gives:
  setcontext: Signal context inaccessible.
