SVN depends on the APR, which is a big library, and possibly Berkeley
DB that isn't a joy either.  Depending on your usage, you need Apache2
too.

Darcs and GNU arch use file-formats that you can actually read with an
editor and standard unix tools.  Heck, even CVS is better than SVN wrt.
