My understanding is that 1_8 is for entire 1.8-series, and then you
have 1_8_6 for 1.8.6 series, 1_8_7 for 1.8.7 series, etc. So,
originally, the changes go to 1_8 branch and then picked up and merged
into appropriate branches if needed.

But that's only my understanding of the process, watching the flow of
the commits.

I use the default ones obtained by configure:
gcc (GCC) 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)
gcc -O2 -g -Wall -Wno-parentheses -DRUBY_EXPORT -I.

Thanks,
