That might be the case. But so far, on my Ubuntu Linux 7.10, I'm
successfully building and running the following versions: MRI 1.8.6 pl
36 (default on Ubuntu), MRI 1.8.6 pl 111 and pl 114 (our current
compatibility target for JRuby), latest 1_8_6 branch, latest trunk,
rubinius, JRuby.  The only problematic build is the one I reported,
latest version of 1_8 branch.

Will dig a bit more.
