This has nothing to do with Floats. Ranges can be defined over instances
of Comparables, and String itself includes Comparable.

irb(main):001:0> r = "a" .. "c"
=> "a".."c"
irb(main):002:0> r.each {|i| p i }
"a"
"b"
"c"
=> "a".."c"
