|On my system, it appears that the result of to_i is simply object_id / 10 for Symbols. Is there some particular reason why this is so, and if to_i and object_id returned the *same* value, would that break code in the field for some reason that's not obvious to me?

Under my implementation, Symbol#to_i value has some encoded
information that is different from object_id value. If you don't see
any problem with your implementation, I guess it's Ok for them to
share same values.
