Hi,

Does anyone (Matz?) know why the (new in 1.9) String.ord method is
restricted to one-character Strings?

In the current implementation, we must first index a String, and then
call ord:  "ABC"[0].ord => 65

Why can't I pass the index to ord itself?  "ABC".ord(0) => 65

The argument to ord should, of course, default to 0. But I don't see
why I should have to index and convert to integer in two separate steps.

Thanks for any insight here,
